YouTube was established in February 2005.Back then, it was not that much of a hit but it only took a short time for it to catch on. An interesting about YouTube is that it was conceptualized by three guys who used to work for PayPal, the popular online payment system.

YouTube first started much like many other technological start ups – with the capital coming from an angel investor, the term for an affluent individual who funds start ups in exchange for profit, and their operations based in a garage. A year after it first started, YouTube was one of the fastest growing web sites in existence. In the same year (2006), in October, Google bought YouTube and the purchase is considered Google’s second biggest acquisition at that time.

Controversies around YouTube content rights.As with most other free content (music and video in particular) sharing web sites, YouTube has had its share of controversy when it comes to copyright issues.

The basic principle is that no one can upload any content that violates the United States copyright law. However, they do not have a system in place which prescreens uploaded materials. As such, they used to rely on reporting by users to determine flaggable material. Then again, they encountered some problems regarding this due to some people flagging others merely for spite.

As a result, since last year, only those who owned the rights could report offenses.
